Today’s e-bike classroom starts with a sprinkler truck.
On the road, nozzles at the front of the truck sprayed water and left the street shining. Watching the spray, Leo naturally asked: where does all that water go? I said some runs into the drains, some stays on the pavement and dries; and if there are flower beds or tree pits nearby, rainwater—and the water from the truck—can help keep the soil moist. Plants in the city need to drink, too.
Once it was clear where the water goes, the next question almost asked itself: who pays for this truck and this water? I said many of the city services you can see—street sweeping, street washing, streetlights, parks—often rest on money people pay together, called tax. When you grow up and work or buy things, you may pay some too; the government then uses that money to hire people to wash the streets and tend the flower beds. It isn’t one family paying alone—many people share the cost.
One layer deeper, we meet a bigger word: urban governance. For a six-year-old, I put it this way—a city is like a big family’s courtyard: streets need sweeping, lights need to stay on, flowers need watering, and when rain comes the water must have somewhere to go. Someone has to agree on the rules, arrange the people, and use the shared money well, so these things happen every day. The sprinkler truck is only one small move; seeing it is really seeing how this city is looked after.
We didn’t turn “tax” or “governance” into textbook definitions. We simply followed one sprinkler truck down a chain: water on the street → plants by the roadside → who pays → all of us together keeping the city going.
Six years old—and already asking who looks after this city.
